Kenya Gatuya AB.....
|Harvest||Oct - Dec|
|Flavours||Blackberry l Purple Plum l Grapefruit|
The Gatuya is back!! This coffee has become a favourite at STCBD. This lot has a classic Kenyan flavour profile. It is big and juicy! Blackberry, purple plum and an intense hit of grapefruit make this one of the most satisfying cups of coffee imaginable.
We were so excited when the Gatuya samples arrived this year. The quality was amazing and we couldn't decide between the AA and the AB, a size classification used in sorting Kenyan coffee beans, so we bought them both! Be sure to check out the AA lot for a completely different taste experience.
From the importer:
The Gatuya Coffee Factory is one of two washing stations operated by the New Murarandia Farmers Cooperative Society, which has a total of around 3,500 smallholder producer members. Each farmer owns about 1/5th to 1/3rd of a hectare and delivers coffee in cherry to the factory.
Coffee in Kenya is typically traceable down to the factory, or mill level: Most farmers own between 1/8 to 1/4 of a hectare, and often grow crops other than coffee as well, which means they rely on a central processing unit for sale and processing of their coffee. Producers deliver in cherry form to a factory, where the cooperative will sort, weigh, and issue payment for the delivery. The coffee is then blended with the rest of the day's deliveries and goes on to be processed. Because of this system, which serves many hundreds to several thoughts of smallholder farmers per factory, there is limited traceability down to the individual producers whose coffee comprises the lots.
